WELCOME TO MY YONIVERSE
378 Gallery is pleased to present the interdisciplinary exhibition, Welcome to My Yoniverse, curated by Rose M. Barron. The show runs from September 4 through 26.
Welcome to My Yoniverse is 378 Gallery’s second exhibition since the beginning of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic, and public health safety and protocols drive the presentation. There will be no opening reception. The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours, Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and by appointment by calling 404-530 9277. Attendance is limited to six people at a time per level and social distance of 6 feet between patrons inside the gallery and waiting in a queue outside is required. Masks are required without exception for anyone inside the gallery and waiting to enter.
The Yoniverse symbolizes the creative energetic cauldron within each of us. It is a space to seed intention, take action, nurture growth and celebrate expression. Welcome to My Yoniverse is an immersive movement installation where participants are invited to leave the present reality and becoming part of the sacred "womb" space.
The artists are all part of the collective, the Seven Sacred SiSTARS, and created their work to explore and celebrate the female sex, gender roles, femininity and womanhood. The exhibition features work by: Rose M. Barron, Sandee M. Chamberlain, Terry Coffey, emmagineering, Katherine Hillis, Gary Pearce, Becky Shanks and Jeannette Yen.
Rose M Barron received a BFA in graphic design from the University of Georgia, an MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and an MA in photography from Georgia State University. Her art has been widely exhibited solo and group showings regionally, nationally and internationally. She has participated in numerous artist residencies. She is a creative projects fellow and part-time professor at the Art Institute of Atlanta.
Sandee M. Chamberlain, a native of Southern California, earned a BFA in the Entertainment Arts with a concentration in Animation at California State University, Fullerton. She has worked professionally as an animator, storyboard artist, illustrator and in technical directior. She earned an MA in animation and an MFA in illustration from the Savannah College of Art Atlanta. She is an assistant professor of animation and illustration at Kennesaw State University in the School of Art and Design.
Terry Coffey studied printmaking at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, Indiana, She created designs for her own millinery business for a decade in New York, New York, then moved to Atlanta and became a critical artist in the Eyedrum collective, working on the art committee and curating shows. She has taught art and sewing classes and art camps for children from her home and studio. Her work encompasses a multitude of media, film collage, works on paper and fabric assemblage.
emmagineering, originally from Rome, Georgia, studied scientific illustration at the University of Georgia and continues to study painting, sculpting, design, build and craft from her Gainesville, Georgia studio. She is currently working on a series of assemblage paintings and installations about the existential intersections of person, travel, and place.
Katherine Hillis earned a BFA in Fashion Design from The Art Institute of Atlanta and works in the fashion design industry. Her works include fashion, costume and jewelry. She is currently working on headdresses consisting of various textiles and materials with a focus on blending the new with recycled and repurposed materials. She collaborates with other artists in exhibitions, and in publications. She has also participated in numerous fashion shows locally, regionally and nationally.
Gary Pearce lives in Athens and works in the greater Atlanta area. He has a BFA in sculpture from Indiana University and an MFA in jewelry and metals from the University of Georgia. His sculptures and drawings have been exhibited in many group shows and are part of private and public collections and installed public art in Atlanta. He is a teacher at the University of North Georgia.
Becky Shanks is an alchemical and transpersonal hypnotherapist, reiki master and intuitive sound healing practitioner. Her Atlanta-based hypnotic healing practice, Presents of Mind, blends hypnotherapy, energy healing and crystal singing alchemy bowls to harmonize conscious desires and subconscious beliefs. She became interested in seeing how the use of brainwave states, entrainment, the “flow” can influence the creative process. She works to develop a ritualized, collaborative, healing practice to explore the creative roles of the masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious, and logic and imagination.
Jeannette Yen is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on the environmental science of oceanography. She teaches biologically inspired design, a process where inspiration from nature is translated into useful processes and products. Her working hypothesis is that biologically inspired designs create innovative and elegantly useful designs. She has sewn clothing since she was a teen, when she made hippie dresses out of Indian bedspreads.
